We all make mistakes consciously or un-consciously or sub-consciously. Most of us are naive to the fact of how we are gaining negative marking in our game of Life for which we have to undergo sufferings in various ways.
As per Garud Puran, Chitra Gupta, born from Brahma's body, a Kayastha, was the first to use letters meticulously by use of pen and paper to record every thought and action of life-form to decide the fate of the soul to be taken by Yamaraj to Hell or Heaven.
Astrology thus divides the entire horoscope of 12 houses out of which 6 houses are considered favorable and the other 6 are unfavourable. The Trik or the 6th of disease and disagreements, 8th of longevity & sudden unprecedented changes & the 12th house of loss, distance and separation, are the most unfavorable. Then there are the others -the Upachaya Houses - 3rd, 6th, 11th and 10th are the ones that create struggle, but give growth later. In this the 6th is common to Trik and the 10th to Kendra. For all the Cardinal, Fixed and Dual Signs the 11th, 9th and the 7th are Badhak Sthanas respectively, that gives difficulties & challenges. The goodness lies after the challenge is addressed appropriately.
There is no way one can escape punishment. Nature will take from us what we took from her with no respite until it is leveled. Astrology is no science beyond Laws of Nature, clearly mentioned in Manu Smriti, to suggest any remedies to escape. Those who are eating out of selling fictitious Upayas will be sent to Hell where they will have to suffer endlessly of as much hunger as they eat and in mental deranged form, for extracting the innocent sufferer by giving advise against the laws of nature. Forgiveness comes from only and only One Almighty. We, as Sinners cannot be our own judges and decide punishment or forgiveness.
So, now when we know, that each thought and action is being recorded and there are pre-decided punishments, the only remedy that really works, is to maintain a Very Disciplined Mind and Body. Now this is very rare to find in Kalyug, when every thing, relationships and knowledge are maligned. Considering the depletion of the universe from Satyug through Treta, followed by Dwapar and then finally the most depleted era of Kaliyug, the punishments have also been allotted keeping the universal depreciation in mind by God. Thus there have been 20 predictions about the Kaliyug's state which we are passing through. Out of these, the last one states the goodness of this Yuga - it is the easiest and the only Remedy or Upaya by which one can be saved from bondage:
kaler dosh - nidhe rajann asti hy eko maha gunah kirtanad eva krishnasya mukta-sangah param vrajet
'Although kali-yuga is an ocean of faults, there is still one good quality about this age: simply by chanting the Naam of Krisna, one can become free from material bondage and be promoted to the transcendental kingdom" Source : Srimad Bhagwatam 12.3.51
